The road to the North

My trip with Punch , Judy and the gang up the Pacific Northwest to Washington and Oregon was tremendous and a success by all accounts! With my trusty Starcraft tow behind camper securely attached to my pick up truck, we rolled out and up the Coast. Camped out for three weeks in the first part of August. Good whether and great people! Huge good natured and fun crowds came through the gate.

I imagine people might well wonder why a grown man like myself would want to play with puppets for a living. It is an understandable thing to be curious about.
The short answer is that it makes me feel good to be connected to something which carries with it a long history of tradition that has brought laughter, joy and catharsis to countless thousands of people over the span of centuries.  The longer answer is that it does something amazing to my insides when I’m performing the show.  It brings me to a place that nothing else can. ..not in quite the same way..
It’s like riding a runaway charging bison made up of part laughter and part eminent disaster! Also there is something strangely gratifying about attempting to control something that, by its definition, represents chaos and misrule.

I also enjoy designing landscapes and pruning roses and such, but i have been taking a break from that to make the Puppet business my mainstay.  Soon i will likely return to designing on a small scale as the urge pulls me. But, i am quite sure i am “a lifer” with Mr. Punch and puppetry.   I’ve been at it now for almost a quarter of a century, so there ain’t no sense in stopping now!

Beyond all that, i feel that i am carrying on a family tradition of presenting Living History.  The show’s connection to the past and it’s continuing vibrancy as an art form up to today and on into the future, keeps me excited to help buoy it along to the best of my abilities in this the U.S of A!  And of course, being blessed with enthusiastic and responsive crowds that cheer on the madness, make up half the formula for the success of the show.  So thanks to you all!

Everybody can relax now, the new site is done and im starting to post..

I would like to officially announce the launching of the New Piccolo Puppet Players website and dedicate it to my Mother, Phyllis Patterson, who passed this last May 2014. Co-founder of the Original Renaissance Pleasure Faires in Northern and Southern California.

My love for theater, the arts and music would never have grown so broad or so deep without having had this environment to grow up in. In fact the name Piccolo Puppet Players is a direct nod to the original kid’s Commedia dell’ Arte troup that came, along with the first Faires, out of her back yard drama programs: “The Piccolo Players”. Thanks Mom!

I will also dedicate it to my dear ol Dad, Ronald Patterson pictured with her below, who passed on in 2012. He instilled in me a passion for puppetry and the arts.
